Beating the Odds with Better Ones: A Thank You Note to Edward Enninful

November 8, 2017

I'm going to be honest, I've been in a rut and I haven't posted in a couple weeks but I haven't given up! As I continue my journey as a creative individual who aspires to have a career doing what she loves, everything I release, any body of work I share; I want to make sure is the most genuine and authentic pieces of myself. Which is why I am so excited about this post, so let me tell you how I got inspired today. While I was scrolling on Instagram earlier today, I came across the December 2017 issue of British Vogue with the mesmerizing Adowoa Aboah gracing the cover.

I love a good magazine cover as much as the next girl but that's not why I felt a tug at my heart strings when I saw it. This issue is the first edition released under Edward Enninful, the first black male to be editor-in-chief of the U.K. edition. He was born in Ghana, then moved with his family to West London as a child. After being discovered by Simon Foxton and working as a model, he caught the eyes of Trish and Terry Jones who founded i-D magazine. At the age of  18, he became the youngest fashion director for i-D magazine. Several years later, he has transformed himself into a powerhouse of diversity in the fashion industry. Shining a spotlight on people of color and all that they contribute to this industry. Being a black girl raised by parents who weren't born in the country they now call home with dreams bigger than the town I'm from, seeing this man that looks like me and continues to rise and achieve goals similar to mine; it almost brings tears to my eyes. Every day I struggle with who I am and my purpose, and more than often I think of giving up. But what would be the sense in that? That magazine is more than just a couple of glossy pages and good photographs. To me, it now symbolizes the dreams of a young black boy that wanted nothing more in the world than to be himself, to be accepted, and to be successful. More than anything else it motivates me and a little voice in my head (maybe in a British accent) tells me that I can do that too. Congratulations and thank you, Mr. Edward.
